DRAWN UPWARD, INTO MOUNTAINS COLD WITH RAIN AND FOREST, INTO NARROW CLEFTS OF STONE, UPWARD FROM CONVENTION, CITIES, PAIN OF LOSS--I SOUGHT TO BE ALONE.
AND THERE IN SECRET CAVES I FOUND A THRONE CONSTRUCTED FOR A BODY STRANGELY SHAPED-- NOT MANLIKE, NOT GOD'S MAKING. I ESCAPED.
I WANDERED THEN INTO A VALLEY, GREEN WITH LIFE, YET SICKLY SOMEHOW TOO-- I HEARD THE SCRABBLING OF THINGS UNSEEN BREATHED ALIEN AIR, SAW POISON IN THE DEW. THEY WERE THE IMAGE OF THE FORM I'D SEEN REFLECTED IN THAT THRONE; NOT DEAD BUT HORRIDLY ALIVE, SLIME-BLACKENED, LEAN WITH HUNGER FOR MY ACHING FLESH. I BLED WHERE PALE CLAWS SCRATCHED ME. TASTING ME, THEY LED MY WITLESS FORM BACK TO THAT MOUNTAIN CAVE-- BEFORE THEIR EMPTY THRONE, MADE ME THEIR SLAVE.
AND TIME HAS FLOWED, AND ALTERED ME IN FLOWING: FOR AS THE MONTHS OR CENTURIES WENT DARKLY BY, MY TORMENT AND DELIGHT EACH MOMENT GROWING, MY MAN'S FORM DIED. BUT I WILL NEVER DIE!
MY SHAPE MAY NOT BE COMELY TO THE EYE, YOU'D SEE IT IN THE NIGHT AND KNOW DESPAIR--
